Cyberpunk Conspiracies

In Acts of the Apostles, Nick Aubrey is just another hotshot computer programmer whose life is going quietly to hell. His friend Todd found a bug in a chip- and got a bullet in the brain. His wife left him, his brother doesn't speak to him, and his financial situation is getting mysteriously worse. In the middle of this, he is offered a dream job, the only catch being that he has to maintain a fanatic loyalty to the man who may possibly have screwed up his life. Things can only go uphill... or not. It seem that this time, Nick is going to have to take his life into his own hands for a change.

Sundman's story is really a yuppie-class cyberthriller about the convergence of technology and moral breakdown, the combination of which creates the potential for ethically deficient people to control the rest of society as their pawns. Purely in terms of writing style, Sundman does a good job, conveying his ideas with crisp dialogue and a variety of interesting "good guys". He seems to know just how far to go in explaining the science behind his apocalyptic vision without boring or losing the average well-educated reader. On the other hand, his villians are mostly one-dimensional, and some of his plots are not tied in together, such that there are disconcerting jumps between chapters, and at the end the reader is left to puzzle out the fate of humanity. This is not a novel for the die-hard optimist or those who don't like world-domination plots. Light escapist fare this is not.
